Go to GitHub from an app, store, or other trusted source. GitHub search can show forks, copies, and projects with similar names. Compare the owner, description, and links of the project. Don't consider a repository official just because it's the first in the SERPs.
Check the project history
See the creation date, sequence of changes, list of releases, and activity. A newly created copy with no history requires extra care. The presence of the source code does not in itself prove the security of the finished file. Pay attention to whether the links to the site and stores coincide with other confirmed sources.
Use the Releases section
Finished versions are usually found in Releases, not among the Code source archives. Open the latest stable release and read the notes. Select a file for your operating system and architecture. Source code zip is not always a ready-made application. Don't download executables from Issues, Discussions, or comments.
Check the file name and size
The name must match the platform: Windows, Android, macOS, or Linux. Double extensions and files masquerading as documents are suspicious. Compare the size with other releases. If checksums have been published, use them to verify the load. Do not disable system protection for the sake of an unknown file.

Do not run the file. Compare the link with the app store and download page, check the ownership details, and contact support. Save the address of the suspicious page, but do not send the file itself. For mobile devices, a store that manages updates and checks compatibility is preferred.
After downloading
Wait for the full download, check the extension and system warning. Install the app without granting unnecessary permissions. Get access data separately in your personal account and do not look for ready-made codes inside third-party repositories. Download updates in the same proven way.
